Guide · Songwriting

Can anyone write a song?

Yes. Anyone can write a song. You do not need an instrument, lessons or music theory to start, only an idea and a way to keep it. Write a few lines about one thing, hum a tune to them, record it on your phone, and you have written a song.

Do I need an instrument?

No. A voice is enough. You can write words and a melody with no instrument at all. Chords help you hear where the song could go, and three can be enough. See songwriting for beginners.

Do I need to read music or know theory?

No. You do not need to read music to write songs. Theory helps later, but you can start by ear.

Can I write lyrics without music?

Yes. Many people write the words first and find the tune afterwards. See how to write lyrics.

Can I write the music without lyrics?

Yes. A melody or a chord pattern can be a song, or can wait for words later. See how to write a melody.

How do I start?

1. Pick one thing that happened to you.
2. Write three plain lines about it.
3. Hum a tune over them, and record it on your phone.
4. Do it again tomorrow.

Will it be good?

Early songs are often rough, and that is normal. Finishing songs is how you get better. See what makes a song good.
