What is a bar in music?

A bar, also called a measure, is a small, equal chunk of music with a fixed number of beats. The time signature tells you how many. In 4/4, the most common time signature, each bar has four beats, and you count "1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4".

Bars and beats

A beat is the steady pulse you tap your foot to. A bar groups those beats so you can count your way through a song. On written music, vertical lines mark where each bar starts and ends. Songs are built from bars: a verse might be 8 or 16 bars long, a chorus 8, a bridge 4 or 8.

What the time signature means

The two numbers at the start of a piece of music are the time signature. The top number is how many beats are in each bar. The bottom number is which note gets one beat.

How long is a bar?

It depends on the tempo. In 4/4, a bar has four beats, so divide four by the beats per second. At 120 BPM, a beat lasts half a second, so one bar lasts 2 seconds. At 60 BPM a beat lasts a second, so a bar lasts 4 seconds. Not sure of your tempo? Use the tap tempo tool to find it.

How many bars are in a song?

Count them by section. If a verse has 16 bars and a chorus has 8, then a song with two verses and three choruses has 56 bars before any intro, bridge or outro. Writing your song as a list of sections and bars, like in our song structure guide, shows you where a section runs long.

Bars in the studio

Recording software counts in bars and beats. "Bar 17" means the 17th bar from the start. Knowing the bar number lets you say exactly where a part comes in, instead of "about a minute in".

Note where things happen

In a long voice memo it helps to mark where each part starts. In songdrafts you can put a marker on a take, name it (verse 2, bridge), and tap it to jump there. The tempo is a field on the song, so you know what the take was played at.
