How to write a bridge
A bridge is a section that sounds different from the verses and choruses, usually placed once after the second chorus. To write one, change something clear, such as the chords, the melody range or the lyric angle, keep it short, and make it lead back into the final chorus.

What a bridge does
The bridge gives the song a turn. After two verses and choruses the listener knows the pattern, and a bridge resets their attention so the last chorus feels fresh. It often shows a new side of the story.
Where it goes and how long it is
Usually after the second chorus, before the final one. Often 4 or 8 bars, but it is as long as it needs to be. It happens once. See song structure for the full layout.
Five ways to make a bridge different
- Change the chords. Start on a chord other than the home chord, such as the IV or the vi.
- Change the melody range. Go lower or higher than the verses and choruses.
- Change the rhythm. Slow it down, or hold chords longer.
- Change the lyric angle. Say what the other person might say, or what changes the story.
- Strip it back. Drop the drums or play softly, so the last chorus lands harder.
Bridge, middle eight or pre-chorus?
A bridge is sometimes called a middle eight, since it is often eight bars long and sits in the middle of the song. A pre-chorus is different: it comes before every chorus. See what a pre-chorus is.
When to skip it
Plenty of songs have no bridge. If the song is short and the verses and choruses already change enough, leave it out. A bridge that adds nothing is worse than none.
Keep bridge ideas together
Bridge ideas often turn up as a stray few seconds in another memo. In songdrafts you can drop a named marker on a take where the bridge idea is, and keep every take of the song on one card.
