How to write a pop song

Start with a hook, usually the title line, and build a clear verse-chorus structure around it. Use a simple four-chord loop, write direct lyrics about one feeling, make the chorus the biggest moment, and cut anything that slows the song down.

1. Start with the hook

Pop is built around one memorable idea, often the title line in the chorus. Find it first. See what a hook is.

2. Use a clear structure

Many pop songs go verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, chorus. Map yours before you write more. See pop song structure and the free song structure template.

3. Pick a simple chord loop

Three or four chords are enough. A very common pop loop is I-V-vi-IV (in C: C, G, Am, F). See common chord progressions.

4. Write direct lyrics

Pop lyrics say one thing clearly. Write the chorus in plain words, then use specific details in the verses. See how to write lyrics.

5. Make the chorus the biggest moment

Often raise the melody, simplify the words and add energy. See how to write a chorus.

6. Keep it tight

Cut long intros, repeated ideas and filler lines. Get to the hook quickly. Then play it for someone and watch where they lose interest.

Keep your drafts together

In songdrafts every take of a song stacks on one card, with the lyrics, key and tempo on the same song, so each draft of the chorus stays next to the one you kept.
