How to write a rap

To write a rap, start with a beat or a rhythm, speak your lines over it to find the flow, build rhymes around the beat, and keep one clear idea per verse. Record it and listen back, because flow is easier to hear than to read.

1. Start with a beat

A beat sets the tempo and the space your words fill. Pick one you can write to, and loop it. Many writers loop a beat for the whole session.

2. Find the flow first

Flow is how your words sit on the beat. Speak or mumble over it before you write words, and mark where the stresses fall. See tap tempo to find the speed of a beat.

3. Build the rhymes

Rhymes can sit at line ends, or inside lines. Near rhymes and rhymes across several syllables can sound fresh. See rhyme schemes in songs.

4. One idea per verse

Give each verse a clear point or a story, and let the hook carry the main idea. See what a hook is.

5. Fit the words to the bars

Counting syllables per bar can help lines match. See what a bar is and the syllable counter.

6. Record and listen

Record every pass. Flow is easier to judge by ear than on the page.

Keep the passes together

In songdrafts every take of a song stacks on one card, in the order you add them, with the lyrics on the same song. songdrafts does not make beats or record; keep those in your recording software.
