How to write a song on guitar
Pick an easy key such as G, C or D, loop three or four chords in a steady rhythm, and hum over them until a melody appears. Write words to the melody, then record the whole thing straight away so you do not lose it.

1. Pick an easy key
Keys like G, C, D, A and E use open chords and are often the easiest. If the song sits wrong for your voice, move it with a capo. See the key and capo chart.
2. Loop three or four chords
G, C, D and Em in G are enough for many songs. See common chord progressions.
3. Find a rhythm
A steady strum gives the song its feel. Try a common pattern: down, down, up, up, down, up, then slow it or leave space. Check your tempo with the tap tempo tool.
4. Hum a melody over it
Loop the chords and hum whatever comes. Record it. See how to write a melody.
5. Write words to the melody
Fit lines to the melody and count the syllables. See how to write lyrics.
6. Record it straight away
A voice memo is enough. You will not remember the exact version tomorrow.
Keep the takes
In songdrafts you can bring those voice memos into one place, stack every take of a song on one card, and keep the chords in the lyrics box. On a computer it keeps your spaces, so chords above words stay lined up.
