Sad chord progressions, with the chords in four minor keys

Most sad chord progressions start from a minor chord and stay in a minor key. Easy ones to try: i-VI-III-VII (in A minor: Am, F, C, G), i-VII-VI-V (Am, G, F, E) and i-iv-VII-III (Am, Dm, G, C). Play them slowly and the sadness comes through.

Why minor chords sound sad

A minor chord has a flatter third than a major chord, and most listeners hear that as darker or more wistful. A song does not have to be in a minor key to sound sad, but starting on a minor chord, and coming back to it, is the quickest way to set the mood.

Sad progressions in four minor keys

Capital numerals are major chords, lower case are minor. The chords use the natural minor scale, except the V in the i-VII-VI-V and i-iv-V-i rows, which is major (E in A minor), as many songs play it.

How to build a sad song from a progression

  1. Choose a key your voice sits in. Use the key and capo chart if you play guitar.
  2. Loop the progression and hum over it until a melody turns up.
  3. Write the verse on the first chords and change one chord in the chorus for a lift.
  4. Add a major chord at the end if you want the song to resolve instead of staying down.

Keep the progression with the song

Chords are easy to lose when they only live in your head. In songdrafts the key is a field on the song, and the lyrics box keeps your spaces, so on a computer you can write the chords above the words. Every take of the song stacks on one card.

Common questions

What is the saddest chord progression?

There is no single answer. Minor progressions such as i-VI-III-VII and i-VII-VI-V are popular choices for sad songs, and tempo, voice and lyrics matter as much as the chords.

What chords make a song sound sad?

Minor chords, especially when the song starts and ends on one. Minor seventh chords can add a softer sadness.

Can a major key song sound sad?

Yes. Slow tempo, sparse playing and a borrowed minor chord can make a major key song sound sad.

What key is best for sad songs?

Any minor key. A minor and E minor are easy on guitar and piano.

How many chords do I need?

Three or four is plenty. The mood comes from where you put them and how you play them.
