How to share a demo privately (a link, not a file anyone can forward)

Unreleased songs get passed around. Here is how to share a demo so the right person can hear it, and nobody else can keep a copy.

1. Share a link, not the file

A file can be forwarded and kept forever. A link can be switched off later.

2. Turn downloads off

Let people listen in the browser without being able to save the file, unless you want them to.

3. Add a password for anything sensitive

Label pitches, unreleased singles and anything under embargo deserve a password, sent separately.

4. Set an expiry date

A link that stops working after a week is one you do not have to remember to switch off.

5. Do not make listeners sign up

If they need an account to listen, many will not bother. Pick something that plays straight away.

6. Revoke when you are done

When the pitch is over or a bandmate leaves, switch the link off.
