Songwriter's block: how to get unstuck
When you are stuck, lower the bar: write something bad on purpose, change where you start, set a small constraint, or go back to an old idea. The goal is to get moving, not to write a good song. Keep everything you write, because the useful line often turns up in the bad draft.

1. Write something bad on purpose
Perfection is what blocks most writers. Set a timer for ten minutes and write the worst verse you can. You may find one line worth keeping.
2. Change the starting point
If you always start with chords, start with a title. If you always start with words, hum a melody over a loop. See songwriting prompts.
3. Use a constraint
Fewer choices make starting easier: three chords, five words, one take. See how to write a song on guitar.
4. Go back to an old idea
Listen to old voice memos. Something you recorded and forgot often has the missing piece. See how to rescue a song from your voice memos.
5. Finish something small
Finish a verse or a chorus rather than a whole song. A small finish restarts momentum.
6. Write with someone
A co-writer changes the room. See how to co-write a song.
7. Change the setting
Write somewhere else, at a different time, on a different instrument.
8. Take a break on purpose
A short walk or a night's sleep helps. Record any idea that turns up on the way, so it is not lost.
9. Read and listen, then write
Listen to songs you love and note what you notice. Then write your own, not a copy.
Keep it all in one place
In songdrafts every take of a song stacks on one card, in the order you add them, with the lyrics, key and tempo on the same song. Old ideas are easy to find again.
Common questions
Why do I get writer's block?
Often because you are judging the idea before it exists. Write first and judge later.
How long does writer's block last?
It varies. Many writers find short regular sessions help more than waiting.
Is writer's block normal?
Yes. Most writers get stuck at some point.
What if everything I write sounds bad?
First drafts usually do. Keep the best line and build from it.
Should I force myself to write?
A short, low-pressure session helps more than a long forced one.
