Do voice memos disappear?
Recordings in the Voice Memos app do not disappear on their own. Audio messages sent in Messages do: Apple says they are deleted from the conversation two minutes after you listen to them unless you tap Keep. You can change the Expire setting to Never.

Audio messages in Messages expire
Apple's guide "Send and receive audio messages in Messages on iPhone" says audio messages are removed automatically to save space: the recording is deleted from the conversation two minutes after you send or listen to it, and the recipient needs to tap Keep within two minutes after listening to save it. (support.apple.com, checked 20 Oct 2026.) Apple also says audio messages that expire before they are saved cannot be recovered.
How to keep audio messages
- Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Messages. On older versions the path is Settings, then Messages.
- Under Audio Messages, tap Expire and choose Never.
- To keep a single message, tap Keep on it. To save it in the Voice Memos app, touch and hold the message and tap Save to Voice Memos.
What stays put
Recordings you make in the Voice Memos app are saved on your device and stay until you delete them. Deleted recordings wait in Recently Deleted for a while. See where voice memos are stored and how to back them up.
Other apps
Other chat apps have their own rules for voice notes. Check the app's help pages, because they change.
If it was a song idea
If you sent yourself an idea as an audio message and it expired, it cannot be recovered. Record ideas in Voice Memos instead, then share them. See how to record a voice memo and how to send one.
