What to look for in a songwriting app

Start with the job: recording ideas, writing lyrics, organising a pile of voice memos, or sharing demos. No app does every job best, so pick the one that fixes your biggest problem, and check that it works on the devices you use and lets you export your files.

1. What is your biggest problem?

2. Does it work where you work?

Check phone and computer. An app that only works on one will be skipped on the other. Ask whether it works offline.

3. Can you get your files out?

Your recordings and words are yours. Look for an export, so you are not locked in. In songdrafts you can export everything as a zip.

4. Who can hear your music?

Check the privacy terms: who can listen, and whether your uploads are used to train AI. Share links should let you control who plays them.

5. What does it cost, and for how long?

Check the price, what is included, and what happens if you stop paying. Prices change, so check the app's own site. For songdrafts, see pricing.

6. Try it with your own material

Use some of your real recordings or a real song. A demo with sample data hides the problems.

Other kinds of tool

If you only need to record, a recorder app or the built-in Voice Memos is enough, and songdrafts is not the one. If you want a free recording studio, see the BandLab comparison. For an iPhone recorder for musical ideas, see Dubnote. For sharing finished tracks, see Samply.

Where songdrafts fits

songdrafts is for the pile of voice memos problem: a board that sorts them into songs, stacks every take on one card, keeps lyrics, key and tempo on the song, and shares a demo as one link. It does not record. For a comparison with the alternatives, see songwriting apps compared.

Common questions

What is the best songwriting app?

It depends on the job. A recorder, a lyric tool and a voice memo organiser are different things. Pick for your biggest problem.

Do I need a songwriting app?

No. Voice Memos and folders work. An app helps when the pile gets hard to manage.

Should it work offline?

If you write on the move, yes.

Can I switch apps later?

Easier if the app lets you export your files.

Are free songwriting apps good enough?

Some are, for a specific job. Check what is limited.

Prices and features change. Check each tool's own site. What is songdrafts?
